Find and Replace PDF Text on Android
Yes — PDFMason for Android can find and replace text across a whole PDF on your phone. You review every match before anything changes, the result is saved as a new copy, and the original file is left untouched. Every feature of the app is free during early access.
How to find and replace text in a PDF on Android
Find and replace is its own tool in the app, separate from tapping and editing a single passage. It is for the repeated change: a renamed product across a contract, an old version number in a manual, a company name that changed everywhere at once. Single edits still belong to the text editor, where you see the paragraph while you retype it.
Open the document and enter what to find
Pick the file, then type the word or phrase to replace. Narrow the search with match case and whole word matching, so “Jan” does not reach into “January” unless you want it to.
Review the match list
Every hit is listed with its page and the line it sits in, and tapping a match jumps to it on the page with the text highlighted. The list is built against the document as it is now — later edits do not add new matches mid-job, so what you review is what you get.
Replace, skip, or apply to the rest
Go match by match: replace it, skip it, or bring a skipped one back later. When the remaining matches should all change, one action applies to all of them. Nothing is written while you are still deciding.
Save the new copy
The batch is applied to a private copy of the document, the copy is verified after writing, and the result is saved under a new name — the original file keeps its bytes exactly. If verification fails, no half-replaced file is published.
The review step is the point. A blind replace-all is how “should” becomes “shall” inside the one word “shoulder” — whole-word matching prevents that particular accident, and per-match review catches the rest: the occurrence inside a quotation, the one in a form field, the one you meant to keep.
What the match list does with hard documents
Not every page can take a batch edit honestly, and the match list says which ones instead of guessing:
| Feature | Situation | What the tool does |
|---|---|---|
| Native text page | Real text objects — a Word export, a web printout | Match is replaced when you approve it |
| Scanned or image page | The words are pixels, not characters | Listed as out of reach — run OCR first, the match is not edited blindly |
| Hidden OCR layer or low-confidence text | Recognized text of uncertain quality | Flagged as not directly editable, with the reason shown |
| Replacement would overflow the frame | The new text is longer than the space allows | The match is flagged and left unchanged — no silent shrinking in a batch |
| Encrypted document | The file opens only with its password | Asks for the password first; processing stays on the phone |
Two further boundaries. A replacement that needs complex shaping or bidirectional reordering — scripts where joining and direction rules apply — is refused in a batch rather than written incorrectly. And overflow works differently from a single edit: in the editor, one replacement can be shrunk, truncated or given room; in a batch, the match is flagged so you decide it deliberately instead of a script shrinking forty paragraphs for you.
Limits, stated plainly
The product-wide limitation list, in the same words used everywhere on this site:
Password-protected files, browser versus app: “The browser tools can't open password-protected PDFs. The Android app can.”
The browser side is deliberately smaller than the app: “No OCR, no compression, no PDF-to-Word in the browser — yet. We'd rather ship nothing than ship a version that doesn't work.”
Line and arrow annotation shapes were tested on real documents and cut: “We tested it on real documents: it only writes correctly to 33% of them. So it's not in v1.”
Saving very large documents: “A 1,136-page document takes 24–32 seconds to save with verification. It runs in the background and you can cancel it.”
Compare works on the text layer, not the pixels: “Images, formatting-only changes and paragraphs that merely moved are not compared — two files that look different but read the same may show no differences.”
Find and replace refuses what it cannot fit: “A replacement that would overflow its frame is flagged and left unchanged rather than silently shrunk — you decide per match, and scanned or low-confidence pages are listed as out of reach instead of edited blindly.”
Camera scanning depends on the device: “Camera scanning uses Google’s document scanner, so it appears only on devices with Google Play services, a camera and enough free memory; everywhere else the entry is hidden and photos can be imported instead.”
Repair is best-effort by design: “Repair rebuilds damaged pages but drops interactive forms, annotations, links, bookmarks, signatures and attachments, and cannot promise that missing content comes back.”
Specific to find and replace: matches are frozen against the original document, so a replacement that itself contains the search term will not spawn new matches mid-job. Saving is a new copy by design — open the result, spot-check a few matches, and keep whichever file you want.
If the change you need is one passage rather than a pattern, the text editor shows the paragraph while you retype it. And to check what actually changed between two files after a batch, text comparison lists the added, deleted and modified lines. The app, with both tools, is on Google Play.
