Add or Remove a PDF Password on Android

Yes — PDFMason adds or removes a PDF password on the Android phone itself: Set password writes an AES-256 encrypted copy, and Remove password works with a password you already know, because stripping protection you cannot verify is not a legitimate path. Both live in the Security & privacy group of the [Android PDF editor](/android/pdf-editor), free during early access.

Set a password

Pick the file

Choose the PDF in the system picker. Files carrying a digital signature are not processed — rewriting them into an encrypted copy would invalidate the signature, so the app declines them instead of breaking them.

Enter the password twice

The main button stays disabled until the two entries agree, so a typo cannot lock the file behind a password nobody knows.

Set the permission switches, if you want them

Two optional toggles: forbid printing and forbid copying. They are stored as permissions in the file, for readers that honor them.

Save and let it verify

The result is an AES-256 encrypted copy, which the app re-opens and verifies independently before reporting success.

One warning comes before you set anything, not after: a forgotten password cannot be recovered. The app says this up front, because encryption has no back door to use later — the password is the only key there is.

Remove a password you know

The legitimate way to unlock a PDF is to know its password. Remove password asks for it, and asks for a reason: a tool that strips protection without knowing the secret is a cracking tool, and this is not one.

  • A wrong password can be retried — nothing is written on a failed attempt.
  • A file without a password is reported as such instead of processed.
  • On success, a password-free copy is saved beside the original, which is left untouched.

Passwords in the rest of the app

Encrypted files are handled the same way everywhere in the app: tools such as flattening and redaction route you through the password prompt first, and their output is re-encrypted with the password you entered on that run, keeping the permissions the file already had. Nothing is decrypted behind your back.

The contrast with this site is deliberate: the browser tools cannot open password-protected PDFs at all. The Android app can — and it never bypasses what a file disallows.

Limits, stated plainly

  • Without the password, there is no legitimate route: the app does not bypass, crack or guess.
  • The permission switches (no printing, no copying) are honored by readers that respect PDF permissions — they are a strong request stored in the file, not a hard guarantee.
  • Digitally signed files are declined rather than rewritten, because a rewritten signed file is a broken signature.

Encryption controls who can open a file; it does not remove what is inside. When the goal is making content unrecoverable rather than locked, that is redaction — see hide private info on Android — and the difference between covering text and deleting it is explained in black boxes versus redaction.

PDFMason is on Google Play — the download page has the store link and requirements. Both password tools are included with everything else: all features are free during early access, and a one-time purchase is planned for the future.

FAQ

Can PDFMason remove a password I do not know?
No. Remove password works only with the current password, which you enter yourself. Without it there is no legitimate route, and the app does not bypass, crack or guess.
What happens if I forget the password I set?
It cannot be recovered. The app warns about this before you set a password, because encryption has no back door to use later. Keep the password wherever you keep the rest of your passwords.
What encryption does Set password use?
AES-256. The encrypted result is a new copy, and the app re-opens and verifies it independently before reporting success.
Can I block printing and copying?
Yes, with two optional permission switches stored in the file. They are respected by readers that honor PDF permissions and ignored by ones that do not, so treat them as a strong request rather than an absolute guarantee.
Why was my digitally signed PDF refused?
Setting a password rewrites the file into an encrypted copy, which would invalidate the signature. The app declines signed files rather than silently breaking them.
Does removing a password change my original file?
No. The unlocked result is saved as a new copy beside the original. A wrong password can be retried, and a file that had no password to begin with is reported as such.
